About Blue Marlin

Blue Marlin Counselling is dedicated to supporting individuals, families, and young people in improving mental health and emotional well-being. Based in Cape Town, the practice offers personalised and evidence-based counselling designed to meet each person with compassion, respect, and authenticity.

Each counselling process is guided by the client’s story, values, and goals, creating a safe and understanding space for reflection, healing, and growth. Whether navigating personal challenges, supporting a child’s development, or addressing family dynamics, the focus remains on empowering clients toward meaningful change.

The Story Behind Blue Marlin Counselling

Who is Blue Marlin

  • Founder

    Zachariah Hechter

    Registered Counsellor (HPCSA: PRC 0045500)
Zachariah Hechter is a Registered Counsellor with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), dedicated to promoting mental health, emotional resilience, and holistic well-being. His professional background spans community mental health, youth development, and family support within both organisational and private practice settings.

Zachariah holds a Bachelor of Psychology (BPsych) degree from the South African College of Applied Psychology (SACAP) and successfully completed his HPCSA Board Examination. He also completed a Supervised Contact Practitioner CPD course, further specialising in family and child-focused interventions.

His practical counselling experience was gained at the Salesian Institute Youth Projects in Cape Town, where he provided counselling and psychosocial support to young people aged 14–35 from diverse communities, including Manenberg, Hanover Park, Bishop Lavis, and Mitchells Plain. His work focused on trauma counselling, emotional regulation, workplace readiness, and general psychological well-being. During his time there, he facilitated individual counselling, psychometric assessments, and group psychoeducational workshops, reaching over 100 students through structured programmes.

In 2025, Zachariah co-facilitated the Rural Development Support Programme’s “Healing Through Art” workshop, designed for NGO workers across the Western Cape. This initiative focused on understanding and transforming trauma through creative expression, in collaboration with Angela Katschke of the Butterfly Art Project.

As an Independent Supervised Contact Practitioner, Zachariah works alongside Child Assist, providing safe and structured parent–child contact sessions in court-directed or high-risk family circumstances. His approach prioritises the safety and emotional well-being of children while fostering opportunities for healthy family connection.

Zachariah’s professional journey also includes experience in business operations and leadership, where he advanced from Salesperson to Process Specialist. This experience strengthened his skills in communication, systems design, and client relations — all of which enhance his effectiveness as a counsellor and practitioner.

His practice is guided by person-centred, cognitive-behavioural, and strengths-based frameworks, tailored to each client’s unique context and needs. Beyond clinical counselling, Zachariah facilitates group and psychoeducational sessions for schools, universities, and workplaces, focusing on mental health literacy, resilience-building, and emotional well-being.

At the heart of his work lies a belief that counselling can serve as a turning point for growth and transformation — empowering individuals and families to rediscover strength, clarity, and purpose.
